What are dental veneers?
A veneer is a thin shell or layer of tooth-coloured material that is bonded to the front surface of a tooth. It covers what you see when you smile, so it can change how the tooth looks: its colour, its shape and its length. The tooth underneath stays in place.
There are two main types. Porcelain (ceramic) veneers are made by a dental laboratory and bonded in place. Composite veneers are made from tooth-coloured resin that Dr Ali Matin applies and shapes directly on the tooth. Why we often suggest composite first
At Perth Prime Dental we focus on conservative dentistry: keeping as much of your natural tooth as possible. For suitable cases, that’s why we often suggest composite veneers. They usually need little or no trimming, can often be done in one visit, can be repaired if they chip, and cost less per tooth. Porcelain can be a better fit when you want a more stain-resistant surface or bigger changes in shape or shade. We’ll talk you through both.
What happens at each step
Porcelain veneers
- Free consultation: examination, X-rays if needed, and what you’d like to change.
- Plan: shade, shape and length agreed with you.
- Prepare: a thin layer of enamel is gently trimmed and impressions are taken. Local anaesthetic is used if needed.
- Lab work: your veneers are made by a dental laboratory. Temporary veneers may be fitted in the meantime.
- Bond: fit, shade and bite are checked before the veneers are bonded in place.
Composite veneers
- Free consultation: examination, X-rays if needed, and your goals.
- Shade: the resin colour is matched to your teeth.
- Build up: resin is applied and shaped by hand in layers.
- Harden: each layer is set with a curing light.
- Polish: the shape is refined and your bite is checked, often all in one visit.
Are veneers right for you?
Veneers may suit you if your teeth and gums are healthy and you’d like to change the colour, shape or length of a few front teeth. Some things are worth sorting out first, or may point to a different option:
- Decay or gum disease is treated before any cosmetic work.
- Grinding or clenching puts extra force on veneers. A custom night guard can help protect them.
- Yellowing across all your teeth may respond to teeth whitening alone. If you’re having veneers, whiten first, because whitening doesn’t change the colour of a veneer.
- More crowded or crooked teeth may be better straightened with Invisalign.
